About this work...
This work is a linoleum cut done in black ink. It is inspired by the designs of ancient Chinese seals and Lin Shi Khan and Toni Perez, two artists who created a series of linoleum cuts telling the story of African people and the "Scottsboro Boys."
Khan and Perez were two of many artists, including poets, theater actors and singer, who spoke in support of the nine black men who were facing the death sentence in Scottsboro, Alabama in 1931. The trial united people, and in particular laborers and working class activists, of all races all over the world. The international campaign was possible because of other flights for rights including the Mexican Revolution and anticolonial rebellions in the Caribbean and Central America.
Each figure in this piece is wearing a head covering related to Native America, Latino, African and Asian cultures. In the spirit of racial unity and the aims of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, this logo submission was created.
